
Ryan Whitworth-Jones is a proud Wiradjuri man and an award-winning director, producer, and arts leader. Holding a Master of Fine Arts (Directing) from NIDA, Ryan has collaborated with leading companies including Sydney Theatre Company, Opera Australia, Moogahlin Performing Arts, Darlinghurst Theatre Company, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, and NAISDA Dance College.
Ryan’s directorial credits span theatre, opera, film, and dance. Highlights include Soft Daddy (Q Theatre), Fidelio (Opera Australia Development), Healing (Brand X), The Queen’s City of the South (Qtopia), Sage to Stage (Scene Theatre at Pier 4, Walsh Bay), Venus in Fur (Sydney Fringe Festival, Best in Theatre Nominee), Cloudstreet (Lane Cove Theatre Company, Best Director Nominee), Life Cycle (NAISDA), I’m Not Inspirational (PACT), and How to Win a Plebiscite (and Tennis) (Festival of Emerging Artists). His screen work includes Eden and Cheats and Liars (Triple J/ABC Rage), the latter earning a 2024 Telly Award.
As an Assistant Director, Ryan has contributed to Cut Chilli (Old Fitz Theatre), What is Wrong with Us? (Yellamundie Festival), the Australian premiere of Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812 (Darlinghurst Theatre Company), and The Job I Took (Triple J). His dramaturgy experience includes collaborations with Australian Plays Transform, Sydney Theatre Company’s The Visitors, Yellamundie Festival, and as a guest reader for the Patrick White Playwrights Award.
Ryan’s producing practice bridges independent, community, and institutional contexts, with credits including National Studio (ATYP), Animal Stories (Q Theatre), Posh and Anomalies (Old Fitz Theatre), Solid Ground (Carriageworks & Blacktown Arts), Elders in Residence (Blacktown Arts), Tapu (Museum of Contemporary Art’s C3West Program), The Naming of Things (Create NSW, Dharug Community & Blacktown Arts), 4E (Powerhouse Museum), Shook (Qtopia), HIVE (Art Gallery of NSW & Sydney Festival), and PIONEERS (PYT Fairfield). His work has been recognised with two Imagine Awards.
Ryan is currently the Creative Producer and Associate Director at the Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP). In 2025, he was named the recipient of the Screen NSW Industry Placement, through which he has worked across major projects for See-Saw Films, ABC, Stan, Apple TV+, and Netflix. Ryan continues to develop his own screen projects and has collaborated with industry leaders including Liz Watts (The King’s Speech), Emile Sherman (The Power of the Dog), Libby Sharpe (Mystery Road: Origin), Garth Davis (Lion), Jub Clerc (Sweet As), and Matt Vesely (Monolith).
